Bilateral Relations between Myanmar and Malaysia

Myanmar and Malaysia established the diplomatic relations on 1st March 1957.  The first Myanmar mission at the legation level was set up in Kuala Lumpur in June 1959 and later raised to the Embassy level. Myanmar and Malaysia enjoy close ties of friendship and cooperation and working closely together to promote those ties.

Myanmar and Malaysia Draft Agreement on the establishment of Joint Commission for the Economic, Scientific and Technical cooperation, to be signed between two governments are being processed.

Myanmar and Malaysia are also engaged in technical cooperation under the Malaysia Technical Cooperation Programme, Myanmar is receiving technical assistance from Malaysia in many field.

Trade and Investment

Total Myanmar exports to Malaysia amounted to US$ 152.038 billion in the year of 2011-2012, while imports from Malaysia during the same year total to US$ 303.410 billion. Myanmar- Malaysia two-way total trade reached US$ 455.448 billion in 2011-2012.

Myanmars ten main exports items to Malaysia are Rubber, Fish, prawns, Sesame, Clothes, Timber, Tamarind, Green Gram, Pigeon Peas, and Corn, while its (10) main imports items from Malaysia are Oil, Raw plastics ware, Petroleum products, Chemical Products, Metal Construction appliances, Wires, Medical products, electrical and electronic machineries, mechanical appliances and crops oil.

Tourism

Myanmar is one of the countries that attract the tourists from all over the world. Myanmar is rich in natural resources such as, gems, timber, tin, coal, limestone, precious stones, natural gas, hydro power and etc. Myanmar is now targeting for 3.09 million arrivals of tourist in 2015 and 7.45 million by 2020.

Myanmar- Malaysia Agreements

Myanmar and Malaysia are working closely with other ASEAN members towards the establishment of an ASEAN Community by 2015.
